A hand held medical scanner straight out of StarWars
Jayaprashanth | May 22 2008

The hand held scanners that we all saw in the various StarWars sci-fi flicks has come a whole circle to land up as a hand held medical scanner developed by researchers at Georgia Tech. This little scanner which will fit your pocket very neatly works on the multi-spectral imaging technology. The once-costly multi-spectral imaging technology has now seen a huge price dip as the hand held scanner uses the inexpensive narrowband filter mosiac developed by Georgia Tech researchers. This, in turn cuts the cost of hand held scanners drastically and makes them very affordable. With this device, even those untrained in medical science will be able to view and assess the different bruises and injuries sustained. Thus, this device becomes very handy in places with little or no access to medical facilities and also in war zones which need rugged devices. The best bit is that the near future will see these hand held medical scanners becoming commercially available.
