Exercise in the Alps sitting at home
Jayaprashanth | Mar 8 2008

Yes, you heard it right, you can sit in your living room and still mountain bike at the foothills of the French alps breathing in the fresh mountain air or even take a row on the picturesque Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Yes, all this with the The Fitness@home virtual training system, unveiled at this year’s CEBIT in Hanover. This cool new technology developed by German researchers at the Fraunhoffer institute of computer architecture and software technology(FIRST) in Berlin (Phew! that is one big name, thank god for acronyms), aims to simulate different conditions for an amazing exercise experience. This early prototype simulates the different outdoor conditions replete with olfactory and oxygen stimuli along with visual effects. What this means is that you can actually smell alpine greenery with cold nippy mountain air blowing at your face. This system can also be combined with a variety of fitness equipment like the ubiquitous treadmill and the exercise bike to give you one hell of a exercise.

What this essentially does is, it gives the user an all new experience each day making each exercise session more of an exciting experience making the user look forward to each new exercise session rather than be straddled with the monotonous gym routine. For all you uninspired lazy bums out there, the Fitness@home virtual training systems’ experience might just fire you up and keep you excited enough to hit the exercise routine regularly. Atleast till the excitement lasts.
